Linz, the capital city of Lower Austria, is located on both sides of the Danube River, with the majority of its old town sights on the southern bank. The historic district’s heart is Landstrasse, which is home to picturesque Baroque buildings as well as many fine boutiques and galleries. The beautiful market square and pedestrian area Hauptplatz is located in the heart of the city.
Linz Schloss (Linz Castle), perched on a hill adjacent to the old town, is a fortress that was first built in the ninth century and has been expanded and remodelled over the millennia. It now houses an excellent history museum (the Schlossmuseum), with exhibits ranging from prehistoric and Roman artefacts to mediaeval arms and armour and a variety of artwork.
Beautiful Botanic Gardens just outside the city centre feature native Alpine flowers, an enclosed rose garden, a cactus house, and exotic plants in a tropical house.
In addition to being known as the Museum of the Future, the outstanding Ars Electronica Center was established in 1996 and relocated to its current ultra-modern home on the Danube in 2009. The centre includes exhibits concentrating on the technologies impacting our modern world, including displays pertaining to climate change and pollution, space exploration, biotechnology, and robotics.
