Achensee is one of Austria’s most beautiful lakes. It is known for its massive size, covering over 6.7 square kilometres and reaching a maximum depth of 133 metres, earning it the moniker “Tirol Sea.” The towns of Maurach and Pertisau are the best places to start exploring the lake, with plenty of lodging options.
Swimmers who don’t mind cooler water enjoy this lake for its incredibly clear water, which makes it an ideal location for scuba diving. Thermal winds provide ideal conditions for kitesurfers and windsurfers, and tourists can easily find boat rentals for a relaxing day on the water. Local tour operators also provide boat tours, and a steamer boat circles the lake on a regular basis, stopping in several towns.
The surrounding mountains and valleys are also worth exploring, with hiking, cycling, and mountain biking available in the summer and skiing available in the winter.
Achenkirch, Maurach, Pertisau, Steinberg am Rofan, and Wiesing are the five settlements that surround the Achensee lake. Together, they make up the “Achensee Sport & Vital Park,” a vast adventure playground with more than 50 activities to entice nature lovers, thrill seekers, and those who long for the outdoors.
